A Brief History of the Faeries The Radical Faeries emerged simultaneously throughout the United States in the mid to late seventies as groups of gay pagans, nature lovers, witches, sacred drag queens and so forth show were looking for an alternative to the commercial gay culture that had taken root in the big American cities. The first gathering of "Radical Faeries" took place in the desert of Arizona in 1979. This now historic gathering was called by Harry Hay , now 85 and considered one of the founding sisters of the faerie movement. As an anthropologist and former communist organizer, Harry was interested in seeing if their was a possible connection between the essential nature of liberated gay men of the late 70's and the 'Two-Spirited" or "Berdache" of some native peoples in North America. |
